Graham Beck
The House of Graham Beck marks a pivotal moment in its journey in pursuit of the perfect bubble.

Founding winemaker and Cap Classique pioneer Pieter "Bubbles" Ferreira formally retires from his role at the estate, passing stewardship of the cellar to long-time Cellarmaster Pierre de Klerk.

This transition represents a natural evolution for the House – grounded in continuity, shared values and an enduring commitment to craft. Under Ferreira’s leadership, Graham Beck has grown from an ambitious South African sparkling wine producer into a global leader in Cap Classique, available in more than 50 countries and recognised among the world’s finest bottle-fermented sparkling wines.

A defining force

Ferreira’s influence on Graham Beck – and the Cap Classique category itself – is profound. Over nearly four decades, his belief in South Africa’s ability to produce world–class sparkling wine helped shape both the House’s identity and the international perception of Cap Classique.

From his early years in the cellar to his tireless “boots on the ground” ambassadorship across global markets, Ferreira became one of the category’s most respected voices. His mentorship of young winemakers, leadership within the industry and role as a global advocate for Cap Classique have contributed directly to the category’s growth, credibility and prestige.

“Pieter’s legacy is not defined by a single wine or moment,” says Helen Kock, CEO of Beck Family Estates. “It lives in the culture he helped build – a culture of patience, precision and belief. His contribution to Graham Beck, and to South African wine, is enduring.”

A continuity of craft

Succeeding Ferreira is Cellarmaster Pierre de Klerk, who has worked closely alongside him for years and now assumes full responsibility for the cellar, supported by wineaker Lizemari Geldenhuys. Together, they carry forward the same disciplined approach, respect for terroir and long–term vision that have defined the House for decades.

“I’ve had the privilege of learning alongside Pieter for over 15 years,” says Pierre de Klerk. “What he instilled in all of us is respect for the vineyard, the process and for time. That philosophy continues to guide how we work every day.”

The House emphasises that Graham Beck’s long–term direction, standards and stylistic identity remain unchanged – guided by the same pursuit of excellence that has long set it apart on the world stage.

Looking ahead

Stepping away from Graham Beck, Ferreira's passion for sparkling wine continues. He now turns his focus to his own label, Pieter Ferreira Cap Classique, alongside other personal ventures – a natural extension of a career defined by curiosity, craftsmanship and dedication to the category.

At the annual Wine Harvest Commemorative Event at Groot Constantia on 5 February, Ferreira received the prestigious Wine Advancement Award in recognition of his extraordinary contribution to South African wine. The award honours individuals who significantly elevate the global reputation of South African wine – a fitting acknowledgement of both his tenure at Graham Beck and his pivotal role in shaping the Cap Classique category.

A new chapter begins

“When we started, Cap Classique was still finding its voice. I believed deeply in what South Africa could do – and Graham Beck gave us the space, the patience and the commitment to prove it,” says Pieter. “I’m incredibly proud of what the team has built over the years, and even more confident in where the House is heading next with Pierre guiding it forward.”

The House enters this new chapter with confidence: rooted in four decades of heritage, strengthened by continuity and inspired by the pursuit that has always guided it.
