Happy 2026 and best wishes for the new year.
Hope everyone had a joyful and restful festive season filled with lots of bottles of good wine, especially some Flagstone wines. I had a good break, although very busy as my holiday was filled with time spent in Struisbaai, Robertson for a family wedding, Ceres for Christmas, and a bike trip with my wife to Pearly beach to go and visit some friends. Luckily, it was before all the fires. Our thoughts go out to all the firefighters and especially to the local residents of all the affected areas.
The new year has kicked off with a bang, and it is all systems go with a vintage that is around 10-14 days earlier than usual due to the very warm and dry conditions. The September to December period was the driest in more than 10 years and has resulted in medium to small berries across all varieties. Expectations are for a good quality and healthy grape harvest although a bit smaller than initial indications due to the dry conditions, especially in the traditional dry land (no irrigation) growing regions.
Our first grapes of the season, Verdelho, were picked on Tuesday, 20 January. Next, we're expecting Chardonnay for Poetry Chardonnay and soon thereafter Chenin Blanc for Tributary Chenin Blanc from our 39-year-old block in Wellington.

With the grapes more than a week earlier, it is a matter of organised chaos mixed with excitement in the cellar. The adrenaline is pumping and harvest 2026 is officially here!
Until February, cheers,
Gerhard Swart
