Heritage in motion: The Engelbrecht vision at Rust en Vrede

Rust en Vrede
Rust en Vrede is, at its heart, a family home shaped by time, place, and purpose.

While the farm’s history stretches back centuries, it is only two generations of the Engelbrecht family who have laid the groundwork for what Rust en Vrede is today, and for what it will become in the future.

The philosophy of the estate rests on three enduring pillars: tradition, focus, and quality. Together, they guide every decision, quietly shaping the wines, the hospitality, and the experience of the farm.

Tradition

Established in 1694, Rust en Vrede forms part of Stellenbosch’s rich agricultural heritage. Wine has been made on this land for centuries, but the modern chapter began in the 1970s under Jean Engelbrecht’s parents, Jannie and Ellen. Their vision marked a turning point for the estate, grounding it in thoughtful, purposeful winemaking while respecting the farm’s long history.

Focus

At Rust en Vrede, focus is a deliberate choice. The farm is dedicated solely to Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah — the varieties that thrive best on this site. This narrow lens allows the team to work closely with the land, expressing terroir with clarity and consistency, and forms the natural bridge to the third pillar.

Quality

Quality underpins everything at Rust en Vrede. By concentrating on what the property does best, the estate is able to produce wines of depth, balance, and longevity. This commitment extends beyond the vineyards and cellar, carrying through to the restaurant, service, and hospitality — where the same care and attention are applied to every detail.

Today, Jean continues his father’s original vision of producing premium red wines, while thoughtfully evolving the estate for future generations. Guided by continuity rather than change for its own sake, Rust en Vrede remains a place where heritage is quietly in motion.

From the vineyards and gardens to the table and the glass, the Engelbrecht legacy is present throughout the farm, welcoming those who pass through its gates to experience the enduring spirit of Rust en Vrede.
