Spier
Discover Spier's Platter's 2026 results: two 5-star wines, including the fifth 5-star for the Frans K. Smit Red 2019.

This year’s Platter's by Diners Club South African Wine Guide has given us plenty of reasons to be proud. Two Spier wines have earned the much-coveted 5-star rating, and a further ten Spier wines have been recognised with 4.5 stars, including flagship blends, single-site expressions, and organically farmed wines.

It is also a moment woven with Spier’s history as Frans K. Smit Red blend receives its fifth 5-star Platter’s rating in the year that its namesake and Spier Wines Managing Director, Frans Smit, celebrates his 30-year anniversary at the farm.

5 stars

Frans K. Smit Red 2019, a Helderberg icon

Our flagship red blend reflects the exceptional quality of its Helderberg mountainside origin, offering dark fruit purity, sculpted tannins and remarkable depth. Crafted with meticulous care and designed for ageing, it stands as the pinnacle of Spier’s wine range. As cellar master Johan Jordaan notes: “To get a 5-star award for the Frans K. Smit Red 2019 is very special and justifies the high quality of the terroir and the dedication to wine production in this region.”

Frans K. Smit Red has been awarded 5 stars by Platter’s for the 2005, 2006, 2015, 2017 and now 2019 vintages, cementing its place as one of South Africa’s most consistently celebrated Bordeaux-style blends. That this milestone coincides with Frans marking three decades at Spier makes the recognition all the more meaningful.

21 Gables Sauvignon Blanc 2024

Sourced from our finest cool climate vineyards in Durbanville, this unwooded Sauvignon Blanc is precise, elegant and layered with bright citrus and saline freshness. It captures the clarity and energy of the Cape’s coastal terroir in every sip.

Our 4.5-star lineup

Alongside our two 5-star champions, a host of wines have earned 4.5 stars:

More than just stars

At Spier, good wine has always started with respecting the land and the people who work it. “These results reflect years of steady work in our vineyards, careful farming and a team that knows the farm as well as they know each other. It is especially meaningful in a year when Frans marks 30 years at Spier, and three decades of shaping how we grow, make and think about wine,” says cellarmaster Johan Jordaan.

We look forward to welcoming you to the farm to taste these wines and experience where they begin.

Spier wines are available on the farm and online, and from leading retailers worldwide.
