As the winter chill sets in, the Raka vineyards are getting refreshed with a few gentle drizzles. We are hoping for more good rain to come! With the seasons cooler temperatures, it is the perfect time to plant our cover crop between the vineyards. And what better choice than peas?
There is something special about strolling through the vineyards just before spring, savouring handfuls of fresh peas straight from the plants. But beyond the sheer pleasure, pea plants offer a multitude of benefits. As all cover crops, they loosen the soil with their roots, reducing compaction and improving aeration. Their biomass turns into organic matter, preventing erosion and retaining moisture in the soil while keeping weeds at bay. This creates an ideal environment for micro-organisms to thrive.
One of the most remarkable advantages of peas is converting atmospheric nitrogen into a form that plants can absorb from the soil. This natural process, made possible by rhizobium bacteria in the root nodules of leguminous plants, eliminates the need for chemical fertilizers.
Flowering pea plants also attract bees and other beneficial insects, showcasing a healthy micro ecosystem with biodiversity between our vineyards. We strive to harness the natural processes of nature to build a resilient and healthier vineyard.
