For the first time in its 55-year history, the Association de la Sommellerie Internationale (ASI) will hold its annual General Assembly on the African continent. From 24-25 May 2025, Cape Town and Stellenbosch will welcome delegates from over 60 countries for strategic meetings, cultural exchange, and unforgettable wine and food experiences – all set against the dramatic backdrop of the Western Cape.
This landmark edition marks not only the first ASI General Assembly on African soil, but also the first major ASI event of its kind to be hosted in the region. Organized in partnership with the South African Sommeliers Association (SASA), the gathering will bring together presidents of national sommelier associations, key ASI stakeholders, and local industry leaders to shape the future of global sommellerie.
"This event is an important milestone not just for ASI but for the African continent,” says William Wouters, president of ASI. “South Africa has long been one of the most exciting wine-producing countries in the world, and the professionalism and energy of its sommelier community made it a natural choice for this historic gathering."
In addition to board meetings and official ASI business, delegates will enjoy a curated itinerary of immersive tastings, vineyard visits, and cultural experiences highlighting the region’s biodiversity, sustainability efforts, and world-class hospitality. The event is expected to strengthen ties between African sommeliers and the global network, paving the way for greater collaboration and representation on the international stage.
This historic General Assembly also sets the stage for another major moment: the first-ever ASI Best Sommelier of Africa and the Middle East competition, scheduled to take place in South Africa in 2027. With momentum building across the continent, the 2025 GA will serve as a launchpad for celebrating and developing sommelier talent across Africa and the Middle East — a region increasingly recognized for its dynamism and growth in the global wine conversation.
Spencer Fondaumiere, chairman of SASA, adds: “Hosting the General Assembly is not just a privilege, it’s a turning point. It’s an opportunity to showcase the depth and diversity of South African wine and service talent, and to celebrate the momentum of sommellerie in Africa.”
The 2025 ASI General Assembly is made possible through the generous support of partners including Stellenbosch Wine Routes, AdVini, Spar, Winterhalter, SA Brandy, Wesgro, SA Wine and numerous wine estates and hospitality leaders dedicated to elevating African wine service.
Media inquiries and delegate registration details will be available via ASI's website and SASA's official event website.
