Wine is more than just grapes and barrels – it's a living expression of the land. And at the heart of that land is soil. Rich, thriving soil gives us wines with depth, complexity, and a true sense of place. But what happens when that soil is depleted, stripped of life and nutrients?
Around the world, soil health is in crisis. Experts warn that if we don’t change the way we farm, 95% of the Earth’s land could be damaged by 2050. Industrial agriculture – heavy tilling, synthetic fertilisers, and deforestation – has drained the very foundation that vineyards rely on. The Cape Winelands, renowned for our exquisite wines, is not immune to this threat.
At Hartenberg, we don’t just react to challenges; we lead the way forward. Long before regenerative viticulture became a movement, we were living it. For us, regeneration isn’t a trend. It’s a mindset. It’s about giving back more than we take, restoring the land so it can thrive for generations.
The best part? Healthier soil doesn’t just sustain our vineyards; it transforms our wines.
Bringing life back to the land
Regenerative viticulture is about working with nature instead of against it. It’s farming in a way that doesn’t just maintain the land, but actively heals it.
Think of it like this: while conventional farming depletes soil over time, regenerative practices rebuild it, boosting biodiversity, increasing water retention, and creating a self-sustaining vineyard ecosystem.
This goes beyond organic farming. It’s not just about avoiding chemicals, but about making every farming decision count. Every root, every raindrop, every grazing animal plays a role in the bigger picture.
At Hartenberg, we have five key principles that guide us:
- Minimal soil disturbance – We avoid unnecessary tilling so that soil structure and microbial life stay intact.
- More plant diversity – We grow different crops alongside our vines, preventing soil depletion.
- No bare soils – We plant grasses and legumes to protect the soil and enrich it naturally.
- Living roots year-round – We keep plants in the ground all year to prevent erosion and nourish underground ecosystems.
- Grazing animals – Our cattle and sheep aren’t just cute, they fertilise, aerate, and bring balance to the land.
The result? Stronger vines, richer soil, and wines that are more expressive, more vibrant, and truer to their terroir than ever before.

Science confirms what we already knew
Hartenberg is the first wine estate in South Africa to receive Ecological Outcome Verification (EOV) – a scientific verification that proves our soil is getting healthier, our biodiversity is thriving, and our farming practices are truly regenerative.
It’s not just about sustaining the land – it’s about restoring it.
Why this matters for wine lovers
Soil health isn’t just a farming concern, it directly impacts the wine in your glass. Healthy soil create better grapes, and better grapes make better wine.
A recent study with Stellenbosch University put this to the test. We took two identical vineyard blocks. One was grazed by cattle, the other left untouched. We harvested the grapes separately and crafted two identical wines. The results?
- The wine from the grazed vineyard was fresher, more elegant, and had a brighter profile.
- The grapes produced slightly lower alcohol levels, creating a more balanced, terroir-driven wine.
Same vineyard, same conditions, but a noticeable difference in the wine. This proves what we’ve always believed: healthy soil creates better wine.
So when you choose wines from regenerative estates like Hartenberg, you’re not just selecting a world-class bottle, you’re supporting soil restoration, biodiversity, and climate resilience.
A legacy in the making
At Hartenberg, we don’t just talk about sustainability. We live it.
We’re not just growing vineyards, we’re rewriting the future of wine.
We believe that fine wine should tell the truest possible story of the land, and that means nurturing the soil, protecting biodiversity, and farming in a way that ensures this legacy continues for generations.
The choices we make today will shape the wines of tomorrow.
By choosing wines that honour the earth, you become part of a movement that restores, regenerates, and protects.
This is our legacy in the making. Will you be part of it?
