This limited-edition collaboration perfectly encapsulates our passion for both wine and art, offering visitors a unique opportunity to enjoy creativity in unexpected places throughout our farm.
Our commitment to art is one of our Growing for Good initiatives that empower communities to make positive social and environmental change. We firmly believe that art should be accessible to all, sparking important conversations and showcasing the incredible talent South Africa has to offer.
As you explore our Cowshed shop, you'll discover Nandipha's vibrant work called "Masole a Mofumahali 2" featured on select items, from gift boxes to greeting cards and posters. The bright colours evoke a festive spirit while staying true to its roots. This artwork originated from our Creative Block project – an innovative initiative launched in 2004 that invites artists to create works on small blank canvas blocks.
Meet Nandipha Jantjies
Born in Bloemfontein, Nandipha is a rising star in the South African art scene. Her work, characterised by bold colours and striking geometric shapes, explores themes of the human form, religion, and social constructs. With a deep connection to African cultural elements, Nandipha's art is both thought-provoking and visually stunning.
About "Masole a Mofumahali 2" (2023) or "A Queen's Soldier," Nandipha explains: "I thought about how women could have powerfully impacted ancient wars or battle fields and I embraced the courage these women possessed. I’m embracing the strength of womanhood and their ability to remain soft, grounded yet bold and fierce.” ‘Masole a Mofumahali’ was my way of still trying to show the beauty even in the midst of war.”
A graduate of the Central University of Technology, Nandipha has already made significant waves in the art world. Her work has been featured in prestigious exhibitions like "Salon Afrique – A Homecoming Reimagined" and "Embodying Her." In 2021, she was a finalist in the Phatsoane Henney New Breed Art Competition.
The spirit of Spier Arts Trust
Our collaboration with Nandipha is just one facet of the larger ecosystem supported by the Spier Arts Trust. Through programmes like HUB Studios, The Creative Block, and Qaqambile Bead Studio, we provide artists with essential opportunities to showcase their work and develop their careers.
Since its inception, we've acquired over 17,500 Creative Blocks from a diverse array of talented artists, making Spier's collection one of the most extensive in contemporary South African art. This commitment to nurturing artistic talent is mirrored in our Creative Block wine range, where each blend is crafted from 2, 3, or 5 specially selected varietal blocks - a true representation of creative fusion in both art and wine.
This festive season, we invite you to visit our farm and immerse yourself in the captivating world of South African art at Spier. Experience our art collection firsthand, engage with creativity in new and exciting ways, and perhaps take home a piece of Nandipha Jantjies' work.
