Pebbles impact film
To celebrate our 20-year anniversary, Pebbles Project created an impact film, "Kindness". A documentary short film that explores the profound impact of the organisation. The film was proudly sponsored by our longstanding supporter Hillebrand GORI.
"Kindness" was selected into the Kleinkaap Short Film Festival (KSFF) in Pretoria and won the award for Best Documentary. Additionally, "Kindness" has been nominated as a finalist at the Big Syn International Film Festival (BSIFF), the largest sustainability film festival in the world. Pebbles Project fundraiser and director of the film, Liesl Ahlers, will attend the BSIFF Awards Gala in-person on 8 November 2024 in London.
The impact film will be available to watch online on 4 December 2024.
In the spotlight: Christeline Mushwana
In the spotlight is Christeline Mushwana, the Pebbles Project School Enrichment Programme (SEP) manager. Chrissy, as most people know her, started her journey at the organisation in May 2016.
Chrissy finds great joy in nurturing relationships that are important to her and believes her secret power in life is her grit and determination. Growing up, Christeline would daydream about making the community in which she lived in a safer place for the children and considered becoming a social worker.
Christeline has a short list of things she dislikes. Her list includes poor customer service, injustice and cockroaches. It is very rare to see Christeline without a beaming smile on her face.
Pebbles is grateful to have Christeline as an integral part of the team!

Citrusdal career open day
On Wednesday, 14 August, Pebbles hosted an engaging Career Open Day in Citrusdal for the 4-5 year old learners. The events aim was to introduce the children to key figures in the Citrusdal community, including representatives from the local library, fire brigade, traffic department, and police. These community members shared valuable insights about their respective professions and conducted informative demonstrations that captivated the young audience.
A heartfelt thank you to the Citrusdal Fire Department, Traffic Department, Library, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Badisa Citrusdal, Johan Zimri Community Development, and Mouton Citrus Clinic for their participation and for making the day truly memorable!
A learning adventure
Recently, a group of 16 learners from Citrusdal, along with their life skills coordinator, support teacher, and Patrick Hanekom, embarked on an exciting educational outing to the Clanwilliam Cape Nature Reserve. The outing allowed the learners to delve deep into the rich flora of the Cederberg region, where they learnt how to identify edible plants and distinguish them from poisonous plant species.
They were also educated about the unique Cederboom and the wide variety of Fynbos located in the Cederberg region. The learners also gained insight into the crucial role fire plays in the life cycle of these plants. Guided by two local conservators from the Clanwilliam Cape Nature Reserve, the group traversed a unique footpath, learning about the historical significance of the rock art created by the Khoi and San people, deepening their understanding and appreciation for the region’s rich cultural heritage.
This outing was not just a journey through nature but a meaningful exploration of the area's history and biodiversity.

Junique's inspiring story
We are thrilled to celebrate Junique, an 11-year-old Grade 6 learner at the Pebbles Academy, who has started her own small business making and selling handmade jewellery. Inspired by her mother, Junique has been creating beautiful earrings and beaded bracelets since July, and she’s already crafted 56 pieces. Junique's Jewellery, available through Facebook, WhatsApp, and word of mouth, has been a hit among her peers. She recently showcased her creations at the Pebbles Academy Market Day, gaining well-deserved recognition.
Her parents are incredibly proud of her achievements. "My parents are very proud of my small business," Junique shares with a smile. She enjoys crafting after school and reinvests her profits into her business. Junique has been invited to visit the Relate Bracelets Head Office in November. Relate Bracelets raise money for charities and create job opportunities for the underprivileged. Junique will get to meet some of the ladies that does the beadwork for the organisation.
Junique’s story is a shining example of passion, creativity, and hard work. We can’t wait to see where her entrepreneurial journey takes her next!
