Boplaas' new 10YO rum-finished whiskey won Gold at this year's International Wine and Spirits Competition with an outstanding 95 points.

The latest single cask release from Boplaas – a 10YO rum-finished whisky - won Gold at this year’s International Wine and Spirits Competition (IWSC) with an outstanding 95 points. The IWSC is one of the most respected global wine and spirits competitions.

In recent years, it has seen a boom of entries from around the world making it not only “an exciting category to watch”, but one that is among the most hotly contested.

“The IWSC is an important competition to us because of the trusted reputation of its judging process and the wide spread of the entries,” says Boplaas distiller Daniel Nel. “This latest award re-affirms our dedication to producing the highest quality whisky and that South African Whisky can compete with the best in the world.”

The Boplaas 10YO Rum Cask whisky was released at the beginning of June to the Boplaas wine and whisky club and is available now to the public on the distillery’s online shop and various tasting rooms.

Made from the finest South African yellow maize and column distilled, the spirit is a triple-matured single grain whisky. The maturation regime saw it spend the first five years in old bourbon barrels, then another four and a half years in an old rum cask before being transferred to a fresh rum cask for a couple of months.

The result is a whisky with a complex, savoury nose layered with fruit. The rich palate unfolds with sweetcorn, candied apple, and warm guava notes. The finish is big, building with a touch of soft vanilla sweetness.

The 10YO Rum Cask is the oldest expression released by Boplaas to date. The bottling comprises of just of 500 bottles, bottled at 46%, non-chill filtered and natural in colour.

It is sold in a branded wooden box with sales limited to three bottles per person.

The combination of low humidity and large variations in the ambient temperatures of the Klein Karoo allows for quicker maturation and a higher angels’ share. This ensures intensity of flavour in Boplaas whisky.

In addition to whisky, Boplaas is known for its premier-quality ports and wines. It has been distilling since 1880. Although whisky was only added to its portfolio just 12 years ago, depth of experience has ensured a stream of awards remains consistent.
