Our Wine of the Week is the striking Perdeberg The Vineyard Collection Grenache Noir 2022, made from dryland vineyards.

Located off the beaten track, Perdeberg Wines lies at the foot of the magnificent Paardeberg Mountain in Paarl. The winery’s rich history dates back to 1941, when a visionary wine farmer named Jan Rossouw suggested the area’s farmers begin producing their own wine. Perdeberg adopted its distinguishing name from the scores of Cape Mountain zebras that once roamed the Paardeberg area, mistaken for wild horses by local inhabitants.

Perdeberg is a winelands destination with something for everyone. The winery offers an array of wine tastings and pairing experiences, as well as delicious country kitchen-style family dining in the restaurant or casual dining outside on the lawns. Children are entertained by a fun garden play area and on weather-permitting weekends, the addition of a jumping castle.

The hallmark and most differentiating quality of Perdeberg wines is their predominant use of unirrigated vineyards, termed dryland vines. Overcoming difficult growing conditions, dryland vines yield small berries with concentrated flavour and colour which in turn create superior wines.

With a vineyard span of over 3000 hectares, mainly in the Paarl and Swartland regions, Perdeberg benefits from different microclimates and various soil types. The natural variation of weather, soil, drainage and altitude from vineyard to vineyard enables them to produce a wide range of wines with distinct qualities and character.

Sourced from nine-year-old vineyards, Perdeberg The Vineyard Collection Grenache Noir is made in an elegant and new-world style, making it suitable to enjoy on any social occasion.

The premium Vineyard Collection is perfectly suited to the wine enthusiast who loves to explore their surroundings, looking for that unique offering. This range is exactly that, offering the wanderlust wine enthusiast a playground of interesting cultivars, created from specific dryland vineyards, each with a unique character for its cultivar and terroir.

Perdeberg The Vineyard Collection Grenache Noir 2022 is made from 100% Grenache Noir.

The vineyard from which these Grenache Noir grapes originated is situated in the Agter-Paarl region and the soil is mostly decomposed granite. The vineyard is bushvine and dryland grown without the addition of any water. These growing conditions result in concentrated fruit and flavour in the wine.

“Grenache Noir is a perfect match for dryland growing conditions. Under these conditions, bush vines produce small berries and concentrated fruit. This is due to the lack of water getting the perfect match of soft tannins, generous fruit flavours and elegance in the wine,” says Albertus Louw, Perdeberg’s cellarmaster.

From the outset, the wine exudes elegance and sophistication with its eye-catching label. Medium red in colour, the Grenache Noir 2022 boasts aromas of red berries, cherries and spices. The wine is fresh, elegant and vibrant with a smooth palate.

Perfect on its own or served with duck, roast chicken, or grilled meats.

This wine is ready to enjoy now, but with the correct cellaring it has the potential to age for a further three to five years.
