Bosman Family Vineyards is one of South Africa’s oldest and most established wineries. Situated in Wellington, their proud heritage forms the bedrock from which innovation and sustainability are a natural progression. The winery produces exceptional quality, handcrafted wines from specially selected vineyards from their farms in Wellington, Hermon, and Hermanus.
Bosman Family Vineyards is not only a wine producer. The winery is part of Bosman Adama, an inclusive transformed wine business. In 2009, 260 permanently employed workers received a 26% stake in this business. To date, it is the largest land reform transaction in the history of the South African wine industry.
The mutual agreement between the Bosman family and the members of the Adama Trust is to continuously strive to create and implement projects that will build a sustainable future for not only the community but also for the environment which they all call home.
Bosman Adama runs a plant improvement facility and a vine nursery supplying stokkies (grafted cuttings) to grape farmers across the country. Today Bosman Adama is the largest vine nursery in Africa, with a broad spectrum of Vitis cultivars for the production of superior quality table, wine and raisin grapes.
The Bosman Adama wine range contains two blends, one Shiraz-based red blend and one organic Chenin Blanc-based white blend. They both represent the maxim: “a whole is greater than the sum of its parts”.
The range pays tribute to the heritage of generations of families working together to produce a blend that expresses the respect between each other and the land on which they live and make their living. So when you taste this wine, you are tasting the story of Bosman Adama, a story of heritage, innovation and transformation.
Bosman Adama White 2023 is a blend of organically-grown Chenin Blanc and Grenache Blanc (85% Chenin Blanc and 15% Grenache Blanc) that thrive in Wellington’s sunny climate and decomposed granite soils, bearing testimony to Bosman Family Vineyards’ investment in natural farming practices.
The Chenin Blanc grapes come from a vineyard called Draai-Draai (“turn-turn” in English), as this site lies within a narrow valley and the tractor drivers need dexterity to negotiate their winding route. The Grenache Blanc grapes come from higher elevations on decomposed granite soils which finishes the blend with brightness and clarity.
All of the Chenin was matured in French oak barrels for seven months of which 10% of the wood maturation was in new barriques. Just before bottling the blend is made up, differing every year depending on the strengths of the components.
The Adama White 2023 has a crisp, golden-yellow heart. White nectarine and slight green pineapple aromas are supported by a mixture of pithiness, almond and a touch of butterscotch. Generous flavours of stone fruit and marzipan develop in the glass while the finish is lively with mineral accents.
This white blend pairs beautifully with tomato and chickpea stew, mild Asian fare, or Chicken Cordon Bleu.
