Harvest news, new wine launches and more with Simonsig

Simonsig
Harvest is wrapped up, but the action is far from over. We start blending our 2024 Kaapse Vonkel next week.

While summer makes way for autumn, we look forward to welcoming some vintage changes: Jamala Gewürztraminer 2024, Langbult Steen 2023 and Frans Malan 2021. We are also very excited to introduce Maritimo - an elegantly fruity Rhône-style red imbued with the spirit of exploration and the promise of new horizons - that will officially join The Grapesmith collection from 1 April.

We're coming to Pretoria

From 2 April to 1 May, we will be taking the spotlight at The Tasting Room in Pretoria as the featured wine farm and we’ll be bringing the big guns. Drop in for a tasting any day of the week or join us for one of two special events presented by third generation cellar master Michael Malan and Managing Director and co-owner Johan Malan.

7 April: "Timeless Terroir" with Michael Malan

Taste the true essence of Simonsig’s terroir with wines from our Malan Vineyard Selection. The cost is R550 pp and includes five wines paired with canapés.

21 April: Launch of Maritimo with Johan Malan

Be one of the first to try the newly launched Maritimo and have the opportunity to explore The Grapemith range - a collection of small-batch wines crafted by the Malan family. The cost is R550pp and includes three wines, Cap Classique on arrival and canapés. Carpe vinum (seize the wine) and experience the best of Stellenbosch, right on your doorstep.

It's a wrap - harvest fun facts

1. Harvest started on 5 January 2024, the earliest in Simonsig history – and finished on 14 March, also making it the earliest finish.

2. The first Piquepoul and Bourboulenc grapes were harvested from a small vineyard in front of Johan Malan’s house, destined for Mediterraneo 2024.

3. We had harvest interns from France, Germany and South Africa (and even a marketing intern from Italy!).

4. The first 2024 wine was bottled on Leap Day – the Jamala Gewürztraminer – also making it the earliest we have ever bottled a wine from the vintage of harvest.

What's in our glasses this Easter

Easter is here and we checked in with the team what dishes they usually eat around this time and which Simonsig wine they would pair it with. From “Hot cross bun Love Burgers” to Knödel, Sauerkraut and beef, here are six ways to shake up your long weekend.

1. Hot cross buns + Satin Royale - Catherine Yorke-Hart (Marketing Coordinator)

2. Traditional curried fish + Jamala Gewürztraminer - Celest Cornelius (Cellar Production Administrator) & Waymian Hendrikse (Wine Advisor)

3. Irish Stew + Pick of the Bunch Pinotage - Tanya Ahrens (D2C Administrator)

4. Hot cross love burgers (any patty, preferably Ostrich, between a hot cross bun) + Labyrinth Cabernet Sauvignon - Alexa Radloff (National Sales Manager)

5. Lamb shoulder in the oven / potjie over the coals + Merindol Syrah - Michael Malan (Cellar Master)

6. Knödel, Sauerkraut and Beef + Frans Malan - Danna de Jongh (Cap Classique & White winemaker)

Please note that the wine club as you know it will be discontinued on 31 March 2024. Stay tuned for a new concept to be revealed soon!
