Celebrating the African wild dog on World Wildlife Day
Yesterday was World Wildlife Day and Painted Wolf Wines celebrated our favourite animal and the hard-working teams who work tirelessly to safeguard African wild dogs from the many threats they face.
South Africa is home to around 500 African wild dogs, most of them inhabiting protected areas like the Kruger National Park. However, there is a small number of dogs that manage to survive as “free-roaming” populations.
One of these free-roaming packs is the Toog area pack in the northern Waterberg. This pack ranges across 125 000 ha of diverse-use, privately-owned properties, presenting endless challenges for the team from the Waterberg Wild Dog Initiative (WWDI) as they strive to keep the animals safe, especially in areas where they may face persecution if they predate on financially valuable livestock and game species.
Recently, we were delighted to assist the WWDI by providing four handheld radios to strengthen communications and ensure smooth and efficient field operations during times of loadshedding or in areas of limited cell network. Monitoring the movements of the pack is crucial because snares, road collisions and deliberate persecution are ever-present threats for these dogs. The latter was brought sharply into focus late last year, when 6 dogs from the Toog pack (3 pups and 3 subadults) died after they fed on a carcass laced with a lethal poison. No arrests have been made yet, but we all hope that justice will be served soon.
Please join us in raising a glass of Painted Wolf Wines for Africa’s magnificent wildlife heritage!
