The harvest team has been working around the clock to get this year's grapes in the cellar at Jordan Wine Estate, Stellenbosch.

Jordan Wine Estate's 2024 harvest update

Heavy and late winter rains did much to replenish underground water supplies at Jordan Wine Estate. We started the season by having to use drone technology to spray the vineyards as soils were too wet and we wanted to avoid compaction. Our dams started overflowing in early June and September saw us receive 101mm of rain over two days.

Picking of the 2024 harvest started earlier this year, on 17 January, with some beautiful Chardonnay grapes making their way to the cellar at optimal ripeness. These grapes are intended for our Blanc de Blancs Cap Classique. With nice gaps between ripening blocks, harvest has been manageable and has given us time to catch our breath between picking.

Our unique microclimate at Jordan has meant we were fortunate to have had less wind than most producers during flowering season. We've seen an increase in volumes on 2023 crops. Currently, the various varietal analyses are looking exceptional, and we are excited to taste the final product from the 2024 vintage.

While harvest is underway, Gary has been putting in the groundwork for new plantings. Before breaking ground, we took soil samples to analyse the pH levels and minerals of the soil on our fallow vineyard sites at the estate. After considering the soil analysis we decided to add, where needed, dolomitic and calcitic lime for more magnesium and calcium in the soil. These are added to improve pH levels and increase the fertility of the soil and will ensure healthy vines and grapes for the next few decades.

We will be planting more Assyrtiko, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc grapes in these soils.
