Justin Corrans, the chief winemaker at KWV, shares an update on the 2024 wine harvest.

KWV's 2024 harvest started 10 days earlier than usual, on 8 January. Currently we are in the thick of harvest amid an anticipated February heatwave. This season commenced with Chardonnay from Wellington, destined for Cap Classique production, now complete. Current observations point to lighter crop yields, characterised by smaller bunches and berries.

However, this has resulted in a notable concentration, enhancing depth of flavour in the fermented wines. Favourable winter conditions, marked by ample rainfall and cooler temperatures in November and December, have supported acid retention, promising a high- quality harvest.

The critical task of scheduling harvest dates for sensitive varieties, particularly Sauvignon Blanc, has been successfully managed between late January and mid-February heat spells, with premium blocks showing excellent promise.

The harvest of red varieties is progressing, with Pinotage nearly complete and Merlot, along with unique varieties such as Malbec, showcasing intense colours and quality due to the concentrated berry-to-juice ratio.

Despite the unpredictable nature of the harvest season, which demands adaptability to weather changes, the outlook for 2024 is positive, and we are anticipating a harvest of great quality.
