The South African Sommeliers Association announces the Gérard Basset Foundation Bursary for WSET Level 4.

The South African Sommeliers Association (SASA) is thrilled to announce the availability of a bursary for the WSET Level 4 Diploma in Wines. This is a prestigious qualification that stands as a pinnacle in the wine industry. The IWEC, in collaboration with the Gérard Basset Foundation, is dedicated to fostering the development of future leaders in the South African wine sector.

Bursary value: R105,000 per student

Total course cost: R135,000

Application deadline: Applications close on 9 February 2024.

Requirements: You have passed WSET Level 3 in Wines with a Merit or Distinction grade.

About the Gérard Basset Foundation

The Gérard Basset Foundation is mandated to fund educational and professional programs focused on supporting diversity, equity and inclusion in wine, spirits and hospitality globally.

Our mission is to provide funding for programmes that significantly enhance the career opportunities of those that they support. We fund credible programmes that support a diverse range of communities, including:

  • Disability diversity

Whilst our Scholarships primarily support those undertaking higher level qualifications e.g. MW & MS, our Grantee programme seeks to support a broader range of communities & individuals at earlier stages in their career journey.

To date, we have supported 66 varied Scholars and Bursary Recipients since our founding in 2021. These scholars comprise 28 different nationalities, living and working in 23 different countries across 6 of the world's continents. In addition to these Scholarships, we have supported 30 Grantees in 16 different countries across 6 of the world's continents. The Grantees comprise organisations ranging from grass-roots non-profits to globally renowned research institutions, and each project which we support with them fulfils our mandate of promoting diversity and inclusion in the wine, spirits and hospitality industries.

About IWEC

The International Wine Education Centre (IWEC) was established in 2011 as the first Approved Programme Provider for the internationally-recognised Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) in Africa. WSET is the largest global provider of wines and spirits qualifications and their wine and spirit courses are the accepted industry-standard in more than 70 countries around the world.

Based in Cape Town, the IWEC regularly teaches courses throughout South Africa, specialising in Western Cape and Gauteng. External to South Africa, the IWEC has run courses in Mauritius, Namibia, UAE, Qatar and Maldives and is happy to consider future courses anywhere to meet demands.
