Tragic passing of wine writer Michael Olivier

Wine writer Michael Olivier passed away unexpectedly at his home in Somerset West last night.

It’s devastating to share that esteemed South African food and wine writer, Michael Olivier, passed away peacefully last night, 29 December 2023, after suffering heart failure. He and his wife, Madeleine "Maddy" Olivier, were living in Somerset West, having moved here from Johannesburg in March 2023. Our sincerest condolences to his loved ones.

Michael was a family man, writer, and broadcaster.

His website reads: "As a young aspiring chef, Michael laid a solid foundation for his career at the Cordon Bleu Cooking School in London.

"Over the next 30 years he had a series of high profile hospitality management posts, was the public relations manager for Boschendal and ran three successful restaurants in the Cape, one of which, Parks, featured in the national top 10 restaurants.

"A lifetime devoted to the promotion and appreciation of the South African wine and food industry has earned him many accolades, including the Lannice Snyman Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2013 Eat Out Awards."

Michael, a legend in the South African food and wine industry, continued to write informative and entertaining food and wine reviews on his website up until his last days.

Celebration of Michael's life

Michael Olivier’s celebration-of-life gathering is taking place on Sunday 7 January at 09h30 for 10h00 at Clara’s Barn, Vergenoegd Löw.

Back A Buddy fundraiser 

Due to Michael's sudden and unexpected passing, family friend Celia Gilloway has started a fundraiser to assist his widow Maddy with the unexpected expenses and loss of income.

“Please dig deep,” asks Celia. “I know times are tough, with the impact of loadshedding and the recent pandemic. Therefore, all the more reason to assist us in raising funds for this worthy cause.”
