Spring 2023 has seen the launch of a book honouring a wine estate's heritage, a new winelands hotel, new wine releases, and more. Here are some of the events we've attended lately.

Vergenoegd Löw launches 'Reds, Racehorses and Runner Ducks' book - Judy and Johan

Vergenoegd Löw The Wine Estate is one of the oldest wineries in South Africa, and it is wonderful to see its heritage being restored. They recently launched a book on this heritage, entitled Reds, Racehorses and Runner Ducks, curated by the late Pieter Cronje. Award-winning wine writer and historian Joanne Gibson was the author of the book. The book launch was hosted at Clara's Barn, one of the estate's restaurants.

 

Launch of Genevieve Blanc de Blancs 2013 at SeaBreeze Bistro

Genevieve unveiled its Blanc de Blancs Cap Classique 2013 at a relaxed gathering on Tuesday 3 October 2023 at the SeaBreeze Fish and Shell bistro in Cape Town. Select media, sommeliers and restaurant managers attended this launch to be the first to taste winemaker Melissa Nelsen's 10 year old bubbly. The wine was beautifully paired with seafood dishes by the SeaBreeze team.

 

Lunch at Delheim Garden Restaurant - Jeanine

On a sunny spring day in October, Delheim Wine Estate in Stellenbosch invited a couple of their media friends to join them for lunch at their charming Garden Restaurant. The occasion? The launch of their brand new summer menu! The new menu comprises of German-Dutch cuisine with a modern twist. Think meat and cheese platters, slow roasted lamb shank with red wine, beer-braised bratwurst, stroopwafels with ice cream...

 

The Hazendal Hotel and Spa ribbon cutting ceremony - Jeanine

The much-anticipated The Hazendal Hotel and Spa has officially opened its doors following a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday 12 October 2023. I was one of the lucky guests to be invited to this fabulous ribbon-cutting event, along with others in the wine, hospitality and tourism industry.

 

Groote Post Pinch of Salt launch at Zeitz MOCAA - Jeanine

Groote Post launched their latest creation on 24 October at a celebrated ocean-view landmark, Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa. The Groote Post Pinch of Salt Chardonnay 2023 is something different, having been fermented in three parts. It is a wonderfully fresh wine with zesty notes, ideal for summer sipping!

 

Launch of the Calcrete Collective - Jeanine

The Calcrete Collective is a group of six family-owned wine estates in the Robertson Wine Valley – Weltevrede, De Wetshof, Rietvallei, Excelsior, and Van Loveren – who came together to establish a new wine category, "Calcrete". This wine category is a minerally unwooded Chardonnay that expresses the region's unique terroir. The collective was officially launched on Tuesday 31 October at a function at The Silo Hotel, Cape Town. Here, we had the opportunity to taste the six different Calcrete Chardonnays, followed by lunch with the winemakers.
