Boschendal Estate’s ongoing commitment to protecting the unique Cape flora and fauna of the valley is a group effort. We work hand in hand with our dedicated conservation partners to protect and preserve our land by promoting sustainable agricultural practices along with educational programmes and initiatives that greatly benefit the unique wildlife that can only thrive within the Franschhoek and Dwars River Valleys.
We work to conserve some of the most threatened vegetation in the world with almost 800 hectares of dedicated conservation areas. By preserving the natural ecosystems of our indigenous flora and fauna, we ensure that some of the rarest and most endangered species of flowers, frogs, chameleons and more can thrive alongside us in our winelands home.
Preserving the Cape Floral Kingdom
Did you know that the Cape Floral Kingdom is the only floral kingdom on Earth that is solely situated within a single country? It has the highest known concentration of plant species in the world with nearly 70% growing nowhere else. Due to our ongoing efforts and successful alien-clearing programme, you may see rare Cape Leopard, Caracal, endangered White Tailed Mouse, Bentwing Bat and many more endemic species living in harmony with us in our working farm’s wild areas.
Conserving our renosterveld
Caring for our critically endangered renosterveld
Renosterveld is one of the most threatened habitats on Earth. The plants and animals in these highly unique fynbos areas are at a very high risk for extinction, so we carefully manage these essential patches of veld to ensure this critically endangered ecosystem is preserved for future generations to enjoy. No farming takes place in our conservation areas and the natural wildlife is given the opportunity to thrive the way nature intended.
Cape Leopard Trust
The Cape Leopard Trust is a non-governmental, non- profit organisation projects to promote the conservation of biological diversity.
Boschendal has two cameras strategically positioned on the Simonsberg side of our farm, All photographs and sightings are shared with the Cape LEopards Trust, where they use the images captured by the cameras to identify individual leopards for their conservation research.
The Cape genet is a nocturnal cat-like carnivore native to South Africa.
Conservation partners
Our conservation partners in the Cape Winelands work with us to protect and preserve our unique plants and animals from harmful agricultural practices, wildfires, and more through collaboration, education and initiatives that benefit both the people and wildlife that make up our communities within Franschhoek. Boschendal is an active member of the Greater Simonsberg Conservancy, a non-profit public benefit organisation supporting us in our conservation efforts.
