The Pinotage Youth Development Academy (PYDA) acknowledges the heroic struggle of the youth of 1976. We note that these very struggles continue today with significant levels of youth poverty.
PYDA is a youth development and training NPO in the heart of Stellenbosch. For the past 10 years, we have provided skills training and work placement to over 500 youth across a number of economic sectors. Part of our program objectives is to support the large percentage of discouraged job seekers through our World of Work Centre.
With the rising unemployment rate, the youth remain vulnerable in the labour market, with the first quarter of 2023 results showing that the total number of unemployed youth (15-34 years) increased to 4,9 million. This resulted in an increase in youth unemployment rate by 1,1 percentage points to 46,5% in Q1:2023.
As a youth development organisation, we cannot turn a blind eye to the rising levels of youth unemployment. In recognition of this context, we are facilitating a drumming session as a symbolic act of protest against rising youth unemployment.
80 Plus youth will gather at Van Der Stel Sports Club in Stellenbosch to drum together in unity and engage in the critical dialogue around youth unemployment. This event is geared towards the PYDA community and youth. It aims to critically engage them on the impact of youth unemployment and economic exclusion in their lived experiences.
The event is taking place from 10h00 to 14h00 on Thursday 15 June 2023.
