The 2023 harvest was an extremely busy one as we were blessed with an abundant crop at Villiera Wines this year.
This did put quite a bit of pressure on the cellar team who were tasked with managing the additional influx of grapes, fermentation capacity, and the transfer of wines to barrels. We are however very pleased with the fruit concentration and quality of the 2023 vintage and look forward to these wines developing.
As we head into winter our focus has shifted to the vineyards where vineyards that have reached the end of their time are currently being uprooted. After the soil has had a good rest period these sites will be replanted with vines better suited to the blocks. The video below shows how we also maintain our sustainable practices during this process by reusing, repurposing and recycling materials where possible. And of course, the Wildlife Sanctuary animals certainly reap some delicious benefits during this exercise.
2023 Wine awards
Our Cap Classiques have again performed well at the National Wine Challenge / Top 100 SA Wines competition with the Monro Brut 2016 and Tradition Brut NV both achieving Double Platinum Awards and Top 100 SA Wines status. Double Golds were also awarded for The Clan 2018 and the Monro Merlot 2021.
At the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge, the 2021 Villiera Cabernet Sauvignon and Villiera Merlot earned Double Gold medals and these wines all received Gold Medals: Villiera Sauvignon Blanc 2023, Villiera Down to Earth White 2023, Villiera Jasmine 2023, and Villiera Down to Earth Red 2021.
