Beyerskloof
The 2023 harvest season at Beyerskloof has come to a close, and we wanted to share some key highlights with you.

Harvest 2023

Our winemaker, Anri Truter, has given us some insight into the vintage, which we're excited to pass on.

The season started off with an unusually dry winter and spring, but we still had some typical cold weather. The vineyards budded slightly earlier than usual due to a warmer than normal start to Spring, which created ideal growing conditions up until the end of the year.

Fortunately, December brought some much-needed rainfall, which helped replenish the vineyard's water levels before the harvest. However, the weather in December and January also presented some challenges, particularly with controlling and preventing higher-than-normal disease pressure.

Harvest began a week earlier than last year, with Pinotage and Pinot Noir grapes being the first to be picked. February was a busy time as everything seemed to ripen at once. All of the Pinotage grapes were harvested and in the cellar by the end of February. More rain came later, which was much appreciated, but the timing made it difficult to decide on the ideal time to harvest Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Ultimately, we had to make some tough decisions about ripeness, but we are happy with the quality of the later cultivars.

This was by far the wettest and most challenging harvest season of Anri's winemaking career when it comes to picking grapes at the optimum ripeness. However, despite the difficulties, we still managed to achieve an above-average yield from the 2023 harvest. Early indications show that the wine we have in the cellar is of high quality, making the challenges we faced during the harvest worth it.
