The Association de la Sommellerie Internationale (ASI) is delighted to announce the winner of the inaugural ASI Gérard Basset Foundation Sommelier Scholarship, delivered by the Sommeliers Academy!
Sharrol Mukendi-Klaas is a South African sommelier at Culture Wine Bar. She has worked in a variety of wine bars and restaurants, and her current role allows her to experience the wines of some of South Africa’s most progressive winemakers.
Sharrol grew up far from the winemaking regions of South Africa, and as she has become more immersed in the industry she has become keener than ever to share her passion with others who, like her, may not have had a chance to experience the diversity of the world of wine.
Sharrol is very excited to commence with the scholarship programme developed by the Sommeliers Academy. It will offer her mentorship, professional training and education which will culminate in them undertaking the ASI Certification Level 2. It will also include: hands-on experience learning work in the winery, from harvesting all the way through to bottling; instruction in practical beverage management essential for restaurant service; and a guided visit to some of Europe’s most iconic winemaking regions.
