Wines of South Africa, Letishia Charles
There is truly so much to see, do, eat and drink in the historical town of Stellenbosch.

Besides the amazing wine farms which certainly need no introduction, have you strolled through the university town, taken in the sights and sounds of the bustling sidewalks, ventured into a museum which was once a home that survived the first great fire in Stellenbosch, enjoyed a spot of shopping at a high end boutique or local craft shop and then filled up on delicious food from a number of superb restaurants – and there are many to choose from. You’ll be spoilt for choice.

Here are my Top 5 favourite things to do in Stellenbosch and a few wine farms to visit too!

Go on a bites and sites tour

A unique tour on foot through the town with a lovely knowledgeable guide will have you enthralled by those little things that you just don’t notice on the average day strolling through Stellenbosch. Experience the authentic South African culture, the delicious local foods, beautiful architecture and interesting history, then end off your tour with a lunch at the oldest hotel in Stellenbosch. There are a variety of tours to choose from, each equally fascinating.

Explore a farmer's market

In the heart of Stellenbosch, surrounded by mountain vistas and vineyards is the Root44 Market where you can enjoy some of the area’s finest wines, delicious foods and homeware & crafts, friendly pets are welcome on-leash, while you enjoy live entertainment too. Great fun for the entire family.

Go strawberry picking

A popular and well-known spot is the Polkedraai Farm where you can pick you own strawberries PLUS meander through their farmstall while the kids enjoy the pony rides, mini-golf and loads of awesome offerings for young and old.

Visit a museum

The Stellenbosch Village Museum is made up of four historic houses that will give you a sense of what it was like to live in this glorious town during the 18th and 19th centuries. These exhibitions include the Schreuderhuis – the oldest restored townhouse in South Africa; and the Blettermanhuis – built in 1789 by the last magistrate appointed by the Dutch East India Company.

Bring out your inner child

…and visit the Toy and Miniature Museum. This delightful museum is home to a collection of scale miniatures, room boxes, antique dolls, dinky cars, cuddly toys and so much more! An extremely detailed and lifelike miniature of South Africa‘s famous Blue Train – the only one of its kind in Africa, is also on show at the museum. Do not miss it!

Visit a local wine farm

Now on to a few of my favourite wine farms…

Muratie Wine Estate

Muratie Wine Estate, tucked in the Khorhoek Valley, is a unique destination for lovers of the beautiful outdoors, fine art and gastronomic pleasure. The wine farm offers wine tasting, breakfast and lunch, as well as charming accommodation.

Haskell Vineyards

An absolute gem in the Helderberg region, Haskell Vineyards is home to luxurious accommodation, fine wines and the Longtable Restaurant where you can enjoy spectacular vineyard and mountain views while you dine. The venue is also perfect for celebrations or corporate events.

Kunjani Wines

Whether you’re looking for a romantic weekend away, a celebratory bubbly lunch or just a quick wine-tasting while exploring Stellenbosch, you’ll find this and so much more at Kunjani Wines. The team are attentive and friendly and make every experience a delight. The sunset views are magnificent, as are their award-winning wines.
