The Gérard Basset Foundation and ASI are offering a scholarship to an emerging African sommelier for 2023.

The Gérard Basset Foundation and the Association de la Sommellerie Internationale (ASI) are offering a scholarship to an emerging African sommelier for 2023. Training, tastings and travels are on the program of this empowering initiative.

We are thrilled to announce an exciting new collaboration between the ASI and the Gérard Basset Foundation to provide funding for a new Sommelier Scholarship in South Africa, to be delivered by the Sommeliers Academy.

The aim of this ASI Gérard Basset Foundation Sommelier Scholarship is to train a sommelier, born in Africa and from a previously disadvantaged background, up to the level of international sommellerie.

The Scholarship will offer the candidate mentorship, professional training and education which will culminate in them undertaking the ASI Certification Level 2, but that will also offer them: hands-on experience learning work in the winery, from harvesting all the way through to bottling; instruction in practical beverage management essential for restaurant service; and a guided visit to some of Europe’s most iconic winemaking regions.

This is an exceptional opportunity which will create a role model and leader in sommellerie in Africa, to inspire others to pursue the same path.
