Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do here at Boschendal. So, we thought we’d share a few tips and tricks to make your home more eco-friendly.

How to start a compost heap at home

The first step? Creating a compost heap at home. Recycling food and other organic waste into compost comes with a wide range of environmental benefits, after all. Fortunately, we’ve got a quick and easy guide to get you started!

The benefits of composting are far-reaching. Adopting this practice at home can lead to improved soil health, healthier plant growth, water conservation, waste reduction, and more!

1. Finding the right location

Find an open, level area with good drainage and partial sun. Consider a spot that neither dogs nor wild animals can reach.

2. Ensuring your compost heap is the right size

The recommended size for a compost heap is no smaller than 1 meter and no larger than 1.5 meters. Too small, and your compost may dry out. Too big, and it will retain too much water.

3. Adding organic materials

Ideal materials for composting include nitrogen/greens (grass clippings, plant cuttings, and fruit and veg) and carbon/browns (branches, stems, dried leaves etc.). Layer or alternate the materials placing bulkier items on the bottom.

4. Watering your compost heap

Your compost heap should be moist, not soggy. The rain will do most of the work for you, but you can add additional water if your heap is looking a little dry.

5. Turning your compost heap

It’s important to turn your compost heap frequently to speed up decomposition. Once you turn the heap for the first time, your waste materials will mix and compost more efficiently.
