The Cape Wine Academy (CWA) has been welcoming students to learn about wine for more than 43 years, and now South Africa’s most recognised wine school celebrates a new era of education and training at its new centre of learning, networking and experiencing wine in the heart of Stellenbosch.
“We are thrilled to give Cape Wine Academy a presence in the vibrant fabric of wine, tourism, hospitality and student life in Stellenbosch. This new space at Oude Postkantoor offers diverse and exciting opportunities to engage with Cape wine at courses, talks and tastings as well as networking with the wine community,” says CWA Principal, Heidi Duminy.
This new address signals an homage to the significant history of the CWA that began in 1979 as part of Stellenbosch Farmer’s Winery wine plan intended to build a culture of wine for all in South Africa with Phyllis Hands as first Principal supported by legend of industry, Dave Hughes. The magnificently restored historic Oude Postkantoor graciously respects these roots with a contrasting contemporary flair that is poised for the future.
The triple volume destination on the first floor includes an impressive 1200 bottle wall of wine and collection of wine books accessed by a signature red ladder. Full video conferencing and hot-desking facilities are available for students, study groups, sponsors and members. This facility further enables online courses and offerings for distance learning.
The wine-specific classroom features large format laser projection for immersive courses and training. An attractive barrel stave gallery by the Institute of Cape Wine Masters honouring the 111 Cape Wine Master graduates since 1983 provides inspiration to go the distance in South African wine education.
The space is completed by a function-fitted wine bar area for less formal tastings, experiences and entertainment. A 3D hive of partnership hexagons pays tribute to 3 levels of support by industry, corporate and private sponsor members.
Since becoming a Non-Profit Company the asserted aim of the CWA is to advance wine knowledge and develop skills in the wine, tourism and hospitality sectors as well as teaching the responsible use of alcohol and healthy appreciation of Cape wines. This venue is a significant step in the right direction increasing access to courses as well as ongoing extended support for all those eager to further their wine learning journey.
“The CWA has played an important role in the wine and related industries as well as amongst consumers over many years, “says Heidi. “Together with the support of industry, corporates, wine lovers and the Stellenbosch community, we are excited to offer a buzzing hub of wine engagement as an exciting and unique winelands destination.” says Heidi. “Please visit us at CWA 7600 – everyone is welcome!”
