The distinctive Veritas symbol of excellence serves as an authoritative quality marker for connoisseurs. With over 1300 wines tasted by an expert panel of more than 70 judges, Backsberg Family Wines' John Martin bold Bordeaux 2017 and iconic Pumphouse Shiraz 2020 were both awarded with a Gold medal at the annual awards ceremony for the Veritas Awards.
The Family Tree range honours the rich tapestry of people and places that were integral within the Backsberg legacy.
The John Martin Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot Malbec Petit Verdot 2017 is aptly named after a man who dedicated over 40 years of his career as Sydney Back’s beloved farm manager. This classic, Bordeaux-style red blend pays tribute to his balanced and bold approach to life. Stewed plum, cigar box, musk and honey on the nose followed by concentrated flavours of black forest berries, cedar and vanilla on the palate. This wine is a true all-rounder - just like John.
The iconic Pumphouse Shiraz pays tribute to a humble concrete structure, the pumphouse. Traditionally located high up on the slopes of the mountain, this structure is a vital life-source for happy, healthy vines. Grown in weathered granite and Chocolate Cake soils on high elevation mountain slopes with cooling breezes from the Atlantic, this wine is suited for cellaring. On the nose expect old spice, cedar and vanilla. Exhibiting a wonderful velvety depth, this is a powerhouse of a wine with flavours of ripe plum, black cherry, mulberry, liquorice and spiced fruit cake. A generous wine that just keeps giving.
