The alcohol ban had a negative impact on the Winetech programme’s funding and as a result essential decisions had to be made, to ensure that goals were still achieved with the available funding. It was equally important to ensure that knowledge transfer takes place successfully and that value is added to the careers of cellar assistants in the industry.
The feedback received from cellars over the past two years, confirmed that there is a serious need for the transfer and development of practical knowledge. This was considered in the planning of the 2022 programme and an information day was hosted at Cavalli Estate for all cellar assistants in the industry. The programme included diverse topics and was presented by renowned vini- and viticulturists, which broadened participants’ knowledge.
Lucinda Heyns of Winetech discussed climate change and how the industry could increasingly be better prepared. Elzette Du Preez, an independent consultant, elaborated on the choices made in cellars. For example, what will influence the decision to give skin contact or are the grapes crushed immediately? Lida Malandra of Enartis gave more information about different cold stabilization methods for wines. Karien O’Kennedy of Winetech discussed the factors influencing wine aroma.
Cellar assistants confirmed afterwards that they would be able to apply the practical information received and that there is a greater understanding of the topics discussed.
The programme concluded with a presentation about responsible conflict management. Greta Grobler, an independent, registered social worker, confirmed that many individuals experience discomfort or stress when dealing with conflict situations and that it is detrimental to ignore or delay unsolved conflict. She gave practical advice on how to manage conflict successfully and confirmed that it is important to confront behaviour, rather than the person. Behaviour can be changed, but personal criticism will certainly increase conflict.
Winetech has a responsibility to participating cellars to ensure that a quality service is delivered and that transfer of knowledge takes place in a satisfactory manner. Cellars, as well as cellar assistants, were given the opportunity after the information day to evaluate the 2022 Cellar Assistant Programme. The feedback received will be included in the planning for the 2023 programme to ensure that the programme remains relevant and adds value to careers.
