Earth Hour 2022: How to mark Earth Hour in a time of loadshedding with WWF

WWF South Africa
Earth Hour is taking place tomorrow (26 March) at 20:30-21:30 and WWF South Africa is asking you to sign up for climate action instead of switching off.

The recent run of loadshedding and unscheduled power outages in South Africa certainly has many of us hot under the collar. So why is it so hard for us to connect the dots between our current energy crisis and the climate crisis? This Earth Hour on Saturday 26 March we are not calling for a switch off, but rather for you to sign up to a global movement calling for more urgent climate action. Let’s encourage our leaders to act now for people and nature!

No switch-off this year

We are no strangers to being left in the dark. So, when Earth Hour comes around on Saturday 26 March at 20:30, we're not asking South Africans to switch off the lights but rather to sign up for climate action.

By signing up today, you’re supporting the move towards a cleaner and brighter future for people and nature. You're joining millions around the world calling on leaders to secure an ambitious global commitment to reverse nature loss at the Convention on Biological Diversity later this year.

Once you’ve signed up, look out for an email from us. It will contain free goodies such as an Earth Hour-themed Facebook profile pics, stickers for your Instagram stories, plus beautiful nature-inspired wallpaper for your devices so you can inspire others to join the movement. What's more, five lucky Earth Hour supporters will each win WWF Panda Gear to the value of R1 000. We hope it’s you!

On the night

This Earth Hour, put nature in the spotlight to make it an impactful and memorable Earth Hour. We’ve put together a list of ideas for how to mark Earth Hour this year:

  • Attend the WWF Earth Hour Adventure Challenge: A family-friendly adventure race on Plaisir de Merle Estate, one of our Conservation Champion wine farms
  • Dine and unwind under the stars: Whether it’s in your garden, a park, or at the beach, a dinner under the night sky can make your Earth Hour memorable. And, if you feel like having a glass of wine, be sure to choose a sustainably produced wine by our Conservation Champions.
  • Go on an exploration adventure: Take your family or friends to the nearest nature reserve or shore and explore the spectacular creatures and plants that call these conservation-worthy spots home.
  • Say "YES" to climate action: Send us a video clip of yourself saying “YES to climate action”, “YES to a better future for all”, “YES to saving the planet”, or “YES to living on a cleaner planet” and send it to us via direct message on Facebook or Instagram.
