The Landskroon Blanc de Noir 2021 pairs well with ceviche with passion fruit marinade.

Landskroon Wine Estate is situated on the southeast facing slopes of the Paarl Mountain, named after the three massive granite blocks on top which shine like pearls in the sunlight after rain.

Owned and managed by four de Villiers cousins, now in their 5th generation of ownership of this premium Paarl property. The three original De Villiers Brothers, Abraham, Jacques and Pierre arrived on board the good ship Gardiol in Cape Town on May 6th 1689. Over the years the family has made its mark in so many fields in the country. This branch of the family is descended from Jacques de Villiers.

They have the benefit of looking back from where they have come, live in the present and plan for the future. Things always evolving and things always been bettered whether it is in the vineyards run by Hugo de Villiers, marketing by Huguette and admin by Madelief and the cellar Paul de Villiers V, since each cellarmaster in those 5 generations was called Paul.

Pinotage, as South African as the de Villiers’s are now, is used for this fine expression of a Blanc de Noir, which is off dry. Blanc de Noir, white from black, may only be made from black grapes by law.

Once harvested, the grapes are delivered to the cellar where they are destemmed and only the free run juice is taken off and cold settled before fermentation at low temperatures. Once fermented to off dry, 7.7 grams of residual sugar, the wine is prepared for bottling.

Pour

From a Burgundy shaped bottle, closed with a screw cap. The relatively new label is simple and elegant. In the glass, the wine is a gembright pink diamond in colour. The aromas and flavours segue one into the other. Berry fruits, with a plum skin acidity line, fynbos florals and so wonderfully fresh and thirst quenching. A lovely summer wine.

Pair

The Landskroon Blanc de Noir 2021 is an ideal mid-morning refresher, a sipping wine and a perfect aperitif before a meal. It is perfect for Oriental dishes like sushi and sashimi or the National dish of Peru, ceviche brought there by early Japanese settlers. My version has a passion fruit marinade.
