The South African Wine Tasting Championships is a competition allowing any wine lover to try to identify 10 wines anonymously.

The South African Wine Tasting Championships, in partnership with the TOPS at SPAR Wine Show and with continuous support from wine.co.za, is a competition allowing any wine lover to try to identify 10 wines served anonymously.

This competition is often referred to as Blind Tasting and although it is not an Olympic sport in Tokyo yet, it can be a fun game to play with friends, or on your own, by putting your taste to the test.

Hundreds of wine lovers used to take their chance at the TOPS at SPAR Wine Shows annuallyaround the country, but this year we bring the entertainment to your home, keeping you Covid safe while enjoying the best wines of the country.

The most innovative South African wineries have teamed up to offer a wine tasting experience never seen before

So how does it work?

You will order your competitor’s pack on taste.sawtc.co.za, and it will be couriered to your home. You will receive the list of possible wines, and you will have to identify and name the wines you have received, competing online at your own time while the competition is open.

To help you to identify these wines, sommelier JV Ridon and our very own MW Cathy Van Zyl have been tasting, analysing and describing all the 49 wines of this SAWTC edition through individual video tutorialsFollowing their guidance, you will have to identify the 10 wine samples sent to you.

To make it happen and become the Supertaster of the year, here are the steps:

    • Order your competitor’s kit from taste.sawtc.co.za, - the only way to register.
    • Collect, or receive by courier, a pack of 10 anonymous wines samples, either by 45ml or 100 ml dose.
    • Watch the tutorials on our SAWTC YouTube channel, and take your own tasting notes as per a face-to-face wine tasting.
    • Put your taste to the test and identify the 10 samples and follow instructions in your kit.
    • Lodge your answers online, with your name, your province and the unique number you will find in the box. A unique link & number will be found in each competitor pack.
    • We will grant you up to 10 points for the right cultivar(s) 6 points for the producer, 4 points for the vintage. The highest scores out of these potential 200 point will be crowned champions!
    • The best Provincial wine tasters will not only receive their respective titles, but they will receive a complimentary new competitor’s pack to compete immediately for the national podium, and potentially for Team SA 2021.
    • The search for the Supertaster will culminate with the national finale on the 12th September 2021 where the best provincial tasters will be invited on Zoom to compete against each other, trying to identify accurately the very same wines selection. If you join the final, you accept that we use your image online!
    • The Best National tasters will be announced live on the very same day! And they will win a great selection of wine bottles offered by the participating wineries.
    • Depending on the possibility of travelling to the World Championships in Chateauneuf du Pape in France on the 2nd of October 2021, the best National tasters may qualify for the wine Olympics
    • If no Team SA can travel this year, the top 5 tasters will automatically qualify for the 2022 finale.
  • The packs, including the entry fee starts at R200 (for 45ml samples) or R350 (for 100ml sample), delivery is a flat fee R85 nationwide, or you can collect from The Culture Wine Bar, 103 Bree Street in Cape Town from 12:00 to 20:00 for collection the day after purchase, Tuesdays to Saturdays.
  • Wine clubs will receive a 20% discount for ordering more than 5 packs delivered to one place. However, the clubs will receive mixed packs! Let’s make the game more exciting! They will need to contact us to apply for the voucher on info@sawtc.co.za
