This breakthrough follows on the launch of the Vino Veritas App by CTP which has been met with phenomenal success since the end of last year by enabling consumers to buy the award-winners directly online. A financial contribution by CTP Packaging has also contributed to this on-line entry development.
The closing date for the 2021 Veritas entries is 17 August and for late entries 31 August at extra cost. For the second successive year there are no entry fee increases to enable as many wineries as possible to participate in the Awards – South Africa’s longest-standing wine show and the most prominent and trusted domestic competition for market-ready wines and brandies.
In this manner Veritas contributes to enable all the wineries, winemakers and viticulturists to compete and benefit from Veritas’s status as a world class competition. Says Christo Pienaar, Chairman of Veritas, “It has been proven over the years that winning Veritas medals is crucial to build brand awareness and to the successful marketing and increased sales of South African wines to consumers worldwide”
The innovative development of a dedicated website for participants to enter for the Veritas Awards by following step-by-step procedures will enable quick and easy entering of each wine or brandy’s details. This will include the same information required in the past and tediously entered in hard copy, including WSR2A and WSRSA certificates, packshots and tasting notes of each entry. This information will automatically also be loaded onto the Vino Veritas App by CTP for release once the results are announced.
CTP Packaging, through its divisions CTP Cartons & Labels and SA Litho Label Printers has supported this project as a long-standing partner of the Veritas Awards, whose director, Leon Witbooi, said,”After the decade during which CTP has remained an enthusiastic financial partner of the Veritas Awards, we are still committed to finding new ways to benefit the wineries entering the competition”.
The Veritas online site goes live today (22 July) and can then be viewed on the link https://veritas-entries.foneworx.co.za/, when producers can immediately enter their wines and brandies. The samples are later verified by inspectors of SA Wine Industry Information and Systems (Sawis) and legally transported to the Johann Graue Hall at Nederburg in Paarl for judging on 13 - 17 September by 17 panels.
With the Covid-19 regulations still in place, there will be three judges per panel, like last year. The highly stringent scoring system isin line with leading international competition standards and medals are awarded as follows: Double Gold 93 - 100 points; Gold: 90 - 92; Silver Outstanding 86 - 89; Silver 80 - 85, and Bronze 75 - 79.
The Vertex Award for the overall champion wine of the competition was introduced in 2017, where a panel consisting of top South African judges select the top wine of the show from all the Double Gold winners, excluding the Museum Class wines. This award has been won by three women winemakers over the past three years – Elunda Basson 2018 (Pongrácz Blanc de BlancN/V), Megan Parnell 2019 (Domaine des Dieux Chardonnay 2015) and Izele van Blerk 2020 (KWV The Mentors Orchestra Bordeaux Blend 2018).
The organisers of the Veritas Awards are fully aware of the responsibility of the safety measures still required for the Covid-19 pandemic and will again ensure that all arrangements are in place for a safe environment for the judging, in line with the thorough protocols developed last year.
The core business of Veritas is to give the wine industry the opportunity to have market-ready wines – as opposed to unbottled young wines – presented for judging and to use the results as a yardstick of quality.
Consumers are focused on the Veritas Awards for its high esteem, as it has been giving guidance on the quality of South African wines available in the market for more than 30 years. Moreover, it is the only competition held by the industry for the industry.
The provisional date the competition’s awards event is Saturday 9 October 2021. Further details regarding the event and public tastings will be announced in due course.
