The De Villiers family of Landskroon Wine Estate in Paarl has owned and managed the property for five generations.

Cellarmaster Paul de Villiers V and his team of winemakers are very happy with the Harvest of 2021. While there are still Cinsaut, Cabernet and the Portuguese varieties, for the Landskroon Cape Vintage, to harvest, all the other varieties are safely in tanks and barrels in the Landskroon cellar.

Out of interest the rainfall of Winter of 2020 was back to normal. The harvest of 2020 was the largest ever on the estate.

The harvest started late this year, two weeks later than usual. Whereas the harvest usually starts on about 28th January, the 2021 harvest started on 8th February. This was as a result of wetter, cooler weather in mid-Summer.

Over the last two weeks, good rains fell which lowered the sugar concentration, and acidity and a wait was required before the levels were good for harvesting.

The Team at Landskroon are happy with the harvest, larger than normal, and evenly ripened. Smaller berries meaning a higher skin to juice ratio.

While the harvest might be over, there is a year’s work in the Cellar getting the new wines into barrels, preparing new vintage wines for bottling and cleaning up after harvest.

Life continues on a busy Wine Estate.
