While the wine industry was counting down the days to the 15th of January for an end to the alcohol ban that was re-instated just before the new year, the latest State of the Nation Address dealt another blow to the industry with no end to the ban on alcohol in sight.

The hard hit wine sector is preparing for the 2021 harvest season which now has the possibility of being harder than the 2020 harvest season that was almost cut short by South Africa's initial lockdown regulations and alcohol ban.

President Ramaphosa announced on Monday, 11 January:

"Health services in several parts of the country reported that the prohibition of alcohol sales had significantly reduced the number of trauma cases seen in our hospitals over the New Year period. It is vital that we continue to protect our health services."

Following this the sale of alcohol from retail outlets and the on-site consumption of alcohol is still not be permitted.

The SA #wine industry has been dealt yet another devastating blow. Even more businesses will be crippled & livelihoods lost following the 4th blanket #AlcoholBan. If the current oversupply can't be moved, there will be no space for #Harvest21.
