News was welcomed during President Cyril Ramaphosa's address on Wednesday, 11 November, which allows for alcohol sales to return to pre-lockdown hours.

The latest announcement saw a new gazette published, offering relief to the hard-hit liquor and tourism industries.

As of 12 November, liquor sales are permitted once again over weekends. The ease of the restrictions of alcohol sales will have a positive effect on wine sales in tasting rooms who have been unable to sell wines to visitors over weekends. Many tasting rooms offered visitors the chance to order the wines they would like to purchase, with delivery taking place weekdays between 9am and 5pm, but many sales definitely lost due to these restrictions.

Another positive announcement sees international travel re-opened.

The new regulations for international travel is outlined:

  • All international travel will resume subject to stringent health protocols
  • Travellers will need to present a negative Covid-19 test result not older than 72 hours from the time of departure
  • Where necessary, travellers will need to enter mandatory quarantine facilities at their own cost

In an effort to avoid a second wave, the National State of Disaster has been extended to 15 December 2020. Restrictions such as the mandatory wearing of a face mask, limiting numbers of gatherings and the national curfew, remain in place.

With the festive season approaching, it is important not to let our guards down and adhere to safety measures while enjoying the comforts of some of the eased restrictions.
