This year’s Shiraz Report convened by Winemag.co.za and sponsored by multinational financial services company Prescient is now out.

There were 70 entries from 56 producers and 36 rated 90-plus on the 100-point quality scale.

The 10 best wines overall are as follows:

Allée Bleue 2018
Casa Simelia Syrah 2018
De Grendel Elim 2018
Lammershoek The Innocent Syrah 2018
Leeuwenkuil Heritage Syrah 2017
Painted Wolf Walker Bay Syrah 2018
Saxenburg Private Collection Syrah 2017
Stark-Condé Stellenbosch Syrah 2017
Tokara Reserve Collection Syrah 2017
Vrede en Lust Lady J Syrah 2017

“There have always been two basic sub-groups of Shiraz, the first including wines that are lighter bodied and overtly peppery and the second made up of richer, fuller wines”, says Christian Eedes, chairman of the tasting panel and Winemag.co.za editor. “The split between the two seems more pronounced than ever and if you strongly prefer the one style over the other then you really need to read the tasting notes rather than just going by the ratings when it comes to making a purchase decision.”
