The implications of the alcohol ban

Much has been said about government’s ban on alcohol during the #COVID19 #lockdown. However, the alcoholic drinks industry not only supports nearly 1 million jobs directly and indirectly but also contributes 3% to GDP. Thus far, the ban has been devastating to both South Africa’s alcoholic drinks sector as well as the economy. Watch this video for the full story.

South Africa is only one of three countries worldwide with a total ban on alcohol sales.

  • R19 billion lost to GDP
  • 800 Micro and SMME manufacturers face bankruptcy
  • Between 40 and 50% of small alcohol retailers face collapse
