To help support communities that are continuing to experience some of the worst and prolonged drought conditions on record, a group effort between members of both the wine and rugby industry have joined hands to launch the Karoo Calling fundraiser.

With a common goal of helping our fellow countrymen and women in need, the fundraiser will take place on Thursday 16th January 2020 at 18:30 and see a variety of individuals and corporates within the wine-producing community of the Western Cape come together and demonstrate solidarity with the farming community of the greater Karoo district.

The fundraiser kick starts with South African wine legend, Beyers Truter leads a panel discussion with rugby superstars from the Springbok team such as World Rugby Player of the Year Pieter-Steph du Toit, Assistant Coach of the Springboks Matt Proudfoot, ’95 World Rugby Cup winner Kobus Wiese and ex-Springbok Captain Corné Krige. Given the Springboks’ recent success at the 2019 Rugby World Cup, it promises to be a thrilling part in the programme line-up.

The discussion will be followed by a dinner prepared by local food personalities, Piet Marais and Frik Oosthuizen,of the popular TV Programme “Laat die Potte Prut” and conclude with an auction of once-in-a-lifetime wines and experiences for the highest bidder.

Project Manager, Heinrich Venter comments: “Wine, rugby and Karoo lamb are in the hearts of every South African community, including the drought-impacted regions.Every day we hear about the worsening situation in the Karoo. With the loss of vineyards and orchards during our recent drought in the Western Cape and many going out of business, we completely understand their suffering. In the Karoo, their herds of livestock and game are currently being decimated every day and we want to do more to support those impacted by the drought. This has compelled us to ask our partners and friends in the wine and rugby industry to come together to help.”

“Niekerkshoop, Sutherland and Vosburg are set to benefit from all the funds raised from this event, ensuring they can continue their vital work in supporting the communities of the devastating drought in the Karoo. They all play a vital role in helping alleviate the pressure of the drought, not only at the farm gate but across the wider communities in which those farms operate.”

“Corporates and individuals who wish to contribute to the Karoo Calling funds but cannot attend the function are welcome to donate via EFT and can contact the Karoo Calling coordinating team for further information.”
