There have been a plethora of wine shows, festivals and tastings in Johannesburg recently which I have truly enjoyed. Not only the chance to taste a whole range of new wines, but also a chance to see so many of my wine making friends.

De Wet Viljoen, winemaker at Neethlingshof Wine Estate is an old friend and I was so pleased to taste through his current wines. And was once again beguiled by the Neethlingshof Gewürztraminer 2018.

Pour
Bottled in what is known as an Alsatian Flute the wine closed under screw cap. The label is elegant and simple with an etching of the estate’s Stone Pine Driveway. In the glass, the Neethlingshof Gewürztraminer 2018 is a gem bright pale straw in colour with lime flashes. The aromas fair jump out of the glass. Tropical white flowers, pink tea rose petals, a touch of soft citrus skin oil and fynbos honey. The entry of the wine is a golden thread of fruit acidity and filling the mid palate firstly with a sweetness which is soon washed away by tropical fruit, litchi, kiwi fruit and melon. The aftertaste is dry and aromatic and wanes gently. This wine will age beautifully if cool cellared for a couple of years.

Pair
Serve chilled. Perfect as a wine spritzer with a good splash of soda and ice. Because of the aromatic nature of the Neethlingshof Gewürztraminer 2018 the food choices need to be carefully chosen. A gentle vegetarian Kerala Vegetable Curry would be a great partner. A crisp salad with Avocado, celery, fennel and cucumber and ripe cherry tomatoes is also a good choice. A little goat’s cheese pastry as a pre-dinner snack is a great match, keep the flavours quiet though.
