March was a month to remember. We even joined the circus! We had food and wine experiences on our doorstep and ventured a little further to try new ones in Piekenierskloof. Follow our adventures in the winelands through our photos...

Cavalli - A food and Wine destination

Cavalli is impressive to say the least, the gardens are fondly manicured and the restaurant boasts panoramic views overlooking the Helderberg region. Cavalli co-owner Lauren Smith is a trained architect and nature lover she is also the  managing director at the estate. The buildings are contemporary and deceptively simple allowing natural light into the restaurant area. An open plan gives one a free flowing feel as you are naturally led out onto the terrace.

Our favourite wines were from the Flagship Range namely the Warlord 2016 and Nightmare 2015.

Allesverloren - a place soaked in history

Allesverloren reminds us of back in the day old school generation-to-generation family owned farm living. The type of life where dust becomes part of you as you till your land, birds dotting the landscape. Waking at dark to start your day and having a snooze during lunch hour. Weekends are meant for a time of reflection as you soak up the view on your front porch, oak trees standing guard while your Jack Russel chases the squirrels. This is Danie’s life, a proud farmer who tells tales with gusto and clearly loves the town he is part of – Riebeek Kasteel. We were all invited to enjoy an alfresco meal on this said porch.  With a  glass of 2009 Allesverloren Cabernet Sauvignon in hand and Danie being the fifth generation Malan, how can one not admire the rich heritage that is Allesverloren.

Something different at Hebron on the Piekenierskloof pass. Meet Grenache!

Hebron tasting facility can be found on top of the  Piekenierskloof pass, above the charming town of Citrusdal just off the N7. Less than 2-hours from Cape Town and definitely worth the visit.

Hebron tasting facility offers a unique food and wine pairing in collaboration with Caro & Steve Oldroyd who are the owners of Hebron Guest House and Restuarant.

The four unique pairings for R 120 are:

  • Grenache Blanc with baked camembert on a crostini with cranberry jus,
  • Savour fried bokkom-stuffed green olives and smoked tomato with the Grenache Rose,
  • Experience the earthy flavours of the Grenache Noir with a thyme and parmesan cheese straw dipped in a mushroom truffle
  • Lastly the flagship Heirloom Red with a beetroot Turkish delight, delicately flavoured with dark chocolate and white pepper.

A fun time with Balance Wines at The Company Gardens in Cape Town

Balance wines organized a fun event as way of introducing their new initiative, an exciting new online game in support of elephant conservation. By helping Hank the elephant balance his way on a unicycle back to his ancestral desert home, players stand a chance to win Balance Bucks, redeemable when purchasing wine at the Balance online store. For Balance Bucks redeemed after completing the final stage of the game, a donation will be made on your behalf in support of the Elephant Human Relations Aid (EHRA) PEACE project.

During the event Lionel Chanarin from Sisonke social circus showed us how to trust one another through movement. Standing on someone hips is a rather scary thing but done correctly we can all find our inner circus. Sisonke – Coming Together!

We're always Out & About in the winelands and will share some more adventures with you next week. Cheers
