Endurance is what is required if you are a vine growing in the vineyard at a top of the Paardeberg Mountain with no irrigation available. You are a bush vine and have battled it out over the recent drought, the worst in living memory. Perdeberg Winery has a nick name - The Home of Chenin Blanc.

And from the modern Classic Collection, through the Dryland Collection and The Vineyards Collection, the grape just shows itself at its very best. Viticulturist Heinie Nel and Albertus Louw the Cellarmaster, have certainly proved their metal with the Perdeberg Endura Single Vineyard Chenin Blanc 2017. Interesting wine produced in the worst drought the Cape has suffered in living memory.

The grapes for the Perdeberg Endura Single Vineyard Chenin Blanc 2017 where hand harvested, tiny berries packed with flavour. The fermentation took place in a mix of vessels, Ceramic Amphora, Diamanté Tank [diamond shaped] and French oak barrels. All the noble qualities of Chenin Blanc shining. This is the largest planted wine grape in the Cape Winelands. After the lying in on the lees, the wine was prepared for bottling.

Pour
From a Burgundy shaped bottle under natural cork. The top of the bottle is dipped in green wax, the label made of textured, handmade looking paper. The design is as simple and elegant as the wine as the wine is full and luxurious. In the glass, the wine is sparkling bright, straw in colour. The aromas are classical Chenin, poached guavas, green apple, sweet tropical limes, honey and white flowers. All are echoed on the palate with an undertow of ripe white fleshed peaches. Fabulous mouthfeel, full and round. Lovely line of acidity running through the wine from entry to the long ending. Touch of minerality too. Made to last, if cool cellared will reward in a couple of years’ time.

Pair

This is a serious food wine, not a quaffer and hardly a sipper. It likes bold white fleshed foods like chicken, yellow-tail, snoek or game birds. My brick Chicken was a great match. Click here for my recipe.
