Michael Jordaan is no stranger to most in the Winelands, being the previous Chair of Wines of South Africa (WOSA) and co-owner, along with his wife Rose, of Bartinney wine farm. Michael’s love of wine is legendary but his passion for entrepreneurship and humble start-ups is what really gets him motivated. It is therefore quite apt that the topic of his address will be: “innovation around the business model of wine”.
With more than 20 years’ experience in the financial services sector and after nearly a decade at the helm of FNB, during which time it was named the “World’s Most Innovative Bank”, he stepped down in 2013 to pursue his ardent zest for pioneering. Among Michael’s numerous accolades he was the 2013 Sunday Times Business Leader Award winner and in 2014 was awarded the CNBC All Africa Business Leader of the Year Award.
Michael now heads up a private investment company, Montegray Capital and has a strategic role in his 21 start-up investments which range from the algorithmic investment fund NMRQL Research to the new data-driven mobile network rain. Michael also co-founded and chairs the new digital-only bank, Bank Zero, to be launched in South Africa. Bank Zero is part of the new frontier of banking which has arrived through smartphones and associated digital technologies.
Michael has a great sense of humour and believes that enjoying wine as much as he does, means he doesn’t take himself too seriously, an important ingredient in innovation.
