Pinotage Association
This week is the entry deadline for this year's Absa Perold Cape Blend Competition.

The category of Cape Blends has become a dynamic, exciting one over the years as winemakers strive to produce exceptional combinations with Pinotage as their centrepiece. And continuing to inspire South African cellarmasters to reach greater heights in this field of endeavour over the years has been the competition organised by the Pinotage Association and sponsored by Absa.

The entry deadline for this year’s competition was originally set as 20 July, but, with interest rising to the extent that it has, late entries will now be accepted until 27 July.

First held in 2011, the Absa Perold Cape Blend Competition has done much in helping to establish a respected field of endeavour and great ambassadors for the South African winelands on the world stage. Winemakers continue to push the envelope in developing wines that include Pinotage as the major component – top quality, interesting blends with the kind of complexity, balance and ageability that make for top wines that are truly South African.

The panel of judges for the 2018 Absa Perold Cape Blend Competition is again led by Jacques Roux, the marketing director of DGB who brings with him considerable knowledge and experience in this class as well as an affinity for South African wines. And as in the past, the competition entry criteria include the stipulation that Pinotage must make up no less than 30% and no more than 70% of the blend. (From next year, the rules will be changed to stipulate that Pinotage must account for at least 30% of the blend and be the dominant component)

The winners of the competition will be announced at an award function to be held on 30 August at Overture Restaurant on the Hidden Valley Wine Estate.
