Before making it to Auction, all wines will go through a thorough selection tasting chaired by internationally acclaimed UK wine critic Tim Atkin and local Master of Wine Cathy van Zyl. The panel consists of eight local and international global wine experts and Masters of Wine (MW). The selection tastings are conducted blind over two days and are overseen by independent auditors to ensure all wines are selected on merit and without favour. All wines are independently tasted and scored by at least four panel members before being considered for inclusion in the 2018 Nederburg Auction.
With growing demand coming from all corners of the globe, it is an exciting time for South African producers as the world recognises the exceptional quality wines being produced locally. The Nederburg Auction is the foremost wine event for any producer to showcase their vintage wines to both local and international wine enthusiasts. There has been a significant leap in both quality and price points achieved at the annual Nederburg Auction over the past few years and this is testament to the exceptional work producers are doing in both the vineyards and the cellar. The average price per 750ml bottle achieved in 2017 was R542 while the highest price achieved for any wine was a recording breaking R16,000 per 750ml bottle.
