Nederburg Auction
South Africa’s pursuit of the perfect wine started when the first grapes were pressed in the Cape in 1659. Today producers are challenged like never before in this quest. It demands great respect – for heritage, for terroir, for obsession even, to get it right. With each turn of the press they are forging our iconic wines one bottle at a time.

It is these iconic wines that have been selected by an international panel of global wine experts and Masters of Wine (MW) for the 2017 Nederburg Auction collection. These rare and extremely valuable wines are being made available for a pre-Auction tasting in both Cape Town and Johannesburg.

The wines on auction this year are fewer, even more rare than before and there’s something for every palate, from very dry to very sweet. What makes this collection so exciting is that no two years are the same and there are producers that have participated since the Auction started in 1975, and new entrants like David & Nadia and Vondeling Wines. There are some seriously old wines with remarkable stories, new wines from very old vines and wines rated amongst the best in world by Neal Martin, arguably the most important wine critic in the world.

A wine with a great story and heritage, included in the collection, is the 1978 Meerlust Bordeaux style blend, which led to the world-renowned Meerlust Rubicon. The wine, bottled by famed winemaker Giorgio Dalla Cia at Meerlust, was never sold commercially. It was produced purely for their VIP customers to taste with Nico Myburgh and the wines on auction are the only known bottles available.

Then there is the Noble Late Harvest Nederburg Edelkeur, which Tim Atkin (MW) describes as “a wine worthy of a standing ovation. South Africans just don’t know how good it is and they will wake up too late as by that time foreigners with their heavy wallets would be gobbling it up”.

Also included is the Hermanuspietersfontein  Die Martha 2006 a rich layered Rhone-style blend comprised of Syrah, Mourvedre and Viognier. This wine has the potential to age gracefully for years to come.

Another exceptional entrant is the Stellenrust 49 Chenin Blanc 2013. Produced from 51-year-old bush vines planted in ironstone, this wine has many complex elements and lovely length; a wine that showcases the important heritage of old vines.

Whatever the story or provenance, every wine included in the 2017 collection was selected on merit.

The wine preview and tastings are an “invitation only” opportunity to pre-taste the high value wine line-up going under the hammer at the Nederburg Auction on 16th September. More than 100 wines will be available for tasting with a select few that are simply too rare to open.

Two preview tastings will be held, the first in Cape Town at the Vineyard Hotel on Tuesday 1st August and the second at the Saxon Hotel in Johannesburg on Thursday 3rd August. Every so often opportunities for tickets become available when existing buyers are unable to attend, allowing new auction participants the opportunity to attend. If you are serious about wine and would like to bid and network with like-minded people, please apply for a ticket through our website at www.nederburgauction.co.za. Tickets are limited for each event with serious buyers given priority tickets.

The preview tastings provide an excellent opportunity to experience South Africa’s most rare, highest rated, iconic wines before the Auction. The Auction catalogue is available for download from our website and includes a full list of this year’s wine line-up.
