According to SANWSA chairman, Charles Hopkins, the rapidly evolving digital era has created a multitude of platforms for sharing information. “As stakeholders in the wine industry, we have a responsibility to ensure that as a collective, we are part of the discussion surrounding South African wine, and that we help to cultivate a culture of wine interest and knowledge in a new generation of readers and consumers. We believe that this competition will allow creative young voices to be heard, thereby stimulating a vibrant and dynamic dialogue on all matters wine-related.”
The competition is open to all South African citizens/residents between the ages of 18 and 35. No persons in full-time employment as wine writers in this age group are permitted to enter, nor previous winners of this competition.
Participants are requested to submit two entries: one article of 700 words, and one blog post of 300 words.
The article must be written on the following: Should SA reposition itself as "the vineyard of Africa" rather than a supplier of cheap and cheerful wine to the northern hemisphere?
The blog must be written on: Tripadvisor is a powerful tool for consumers to have their say. Could social media replace traditional wine guides?
All entries will be judged by a panel of experienced and distinguished South African wine writers.
Guidelines to consider include
o Content – to reflect accuracy, readability, information, education and a measure of entertainment
o Accuracy – it is imperative that that attention is given to spelling and grammar
o Reasoning – the ability to present a premise and conclusion, or an argument
o Communication & Narrative – the skill applied to ‘telling a good story’ and sharing information with a reader
The winner is set to receive a cash prize of R15 000 and the runner-up R7 500. Entries may be submitted in any of the 11 official South African languages. All participants are to send this in MS Word format to: admin@veritas.co.za along with a short CV of the entrant and stating specific details of previous wine writing activities.
The completion closes at 18:00 on Wednesday 2nd November 2016. Requests for an entry form or any enquiries can be directed to SANWSA at the above e-mail address.
