The Nederburg Charity Auction wine line-up this year represents a veritable history lesson – both South African and international – in line with the event’s Heritage theme.
Some of the extraordinary local wines going on offer chronicles some of the most distressed agricultural, political and environmental periods in South African history, but at the same time celebrates what is widely regarded as some of the greatest vintages ever produced in this country. And from further afield, even an 18th-century American president features in the backstory to one of the international wines going under the hammer.
The line-up includes a bottle of 42-year-old House of Van Ryn’s brandy donated by Distell in recognition of the Auction’s 42nd birthday, a case of the very last Stellenbosch Cinsaut ever produced as the line was discontinued in 1974, and a very rare collection of Rustenburg 1965, a wine that celebrates the resurrection of a great estate ravaged by disease and economic depression during the previous century.
Also in the line-up is a Pinotage collection of 10 x 750ml bottles, donated by the Pinotage Association, representating the who’s who of this historic South African varietal, and a very special single bottle of 1951 Alto Rouge, considered to be some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon wines produced locally and one of the rarest wines on the market, valued at R10 000.
Some of the notable international wines featuring this year are a Château Haut Brion Premier Grand Cru 1966, singled out by US ambassador to France and later president Thomas Jefferson as the stand-out wine of the region, and a Taylor’s Vintage Port 1948, a wine distinguished with a magical 100/100 score by wine writer Neal Martin.
The Charity Auction, run after the main Auction on Saturday 17th September, is an opportunity for the industry to open its heart and purse while investing in the futures of the people who make up the backbone of our local industry: its labour, the teachers and social workers who help educate and care for its workforce, their children and their dependents. Roland Peens from Wine Cellar takes up the charity auction gavel and will knock down 18 items in the main marquee area.
