Nederburg Auction
For the first time in the history of this prestigious event, two auctioneers will knock down the wines selected for the 42nd annual Nederburg Auction in September. David Elswood, international head of wine for Christie’s, joins Bonhams’ Anthony Barne MW, who marks his seventh consecutive year as auctioneer for South Africa’s longest running fine wine auction.

This highly experienced team take up their hammers on 16th & 17th September at Nederburg wine estate in Paarl, where buyers from all over the world come together to bid on a collection of local icon wines that are not available on the open market.

Nederburg Auction manager Dalene Steyn says the task to knock down approximately 800 lots over two days is a big one. “While overall wine volumes over the past several years have decreased, the number of wines to auction over a two-day period is still high. We’d like to split the responsibility equally this year, rotating every hour to ensure that the auctioneer team stays fresh and energised. ”

“With this in mind, several changes to the auction set up in the hall itself will be implemented to accommodate a larger auctioneer team, while bringing them closer to the buyers. And we might have a little fun with a friendly ‘inter-auction house’ competition at the same time to see who can sell the most wines!”

Anthony Barne is only the third auctioneer in the 42-year history of the Nederburg Auction, following in the footsteps of the legendary auctioneer Patrick Grubb MW (1975–2005) and the late Stephan Welz (2006–2009).

In the wine trade since 1981, David has enjoyed a long working relationship with Christies that includes working with Michael Broadbent MW and Anthony Hanson MW to ensure that Christie’s stays at the forefront of the competitive international wine auction market. Having officiated for several international auctions, including the Florida Winefest Auction, Auction Napa Valley and the Napa Premiere in 2015 and 2016, David is thrilled to be involved with the Nederburg Auction. “South Africa is coming into its own as a country that can produce quality wines that easily measure up against the best in the world. I look forward to helping discerning buyers to acquire the exceptional wines that feature on the auction - while they’re still fairly affordable!”

Anthony and David will auction 146 wines from 79 producers on the 16th & 17th September. Visit www.nederburgauction.co.za for the complete list of wines and participating producers. Potential buyers who are keen to register to attend and bid at the 42nd annual event can do so by clicking here.
